Kill la Kill- I'm Singing in The Blood

Description

I thought I'd put a warning on there since it's literally raining blood.
From this scene of the Kill la Kill anime www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ2Yq-…

Y'know, this show is a bit problematic with how it delivers its message of positive body image and just being yourself, but it's really well-written and creative.

Anyway, this is another piece from the show Kill la Kill featuring the villain Harime Nui, Grand Couturier. It's kind of funny because my favorite character is Satsuki but I chose someone who annoys the doodle out of me to draw first.

Though to be honest, I feel like Harime Nui, the girl pictured here, is a much better villain than Ragyo. I mean, if you were comparing who was more of a terrible person/parent Ragyo would definitely win. She's working together with aliens to bring about humanity's destruction, she had her newborn daughter used in an experiment, she murdered her husband, and she sexually assaulted Satsuki. However, in terms of being a villain she's super predictable and usually too ridiculous looking to inspire fear.

For instance, take Medusa from Soul Eater. Yes, she's a terrible parent, but she also looks scary, is cold and calculating, and she knows how to get under each character's skin in a unique way. Ragyo is a walking kinky wet dream, so much so that even when she's doing something truly abhorrent like assaulting Satsuki it looks more like fanservice and we don't get the true impact of what's being done. Not only does it downplay Ragyo's deeds but also makes the audience unable to really feel any impact from Ragyo as a villain. To add salt into the wound her personality is bland. She's pompous, powerful, and uncaring. It's almost as if they try to build up her horrible deeds to cover up that fact that her personality is like every other villain ever.

Now, Harime isn't exactly scary looking either but it works for her as she isn't so predictable. We're given no information on her except that she enjoys her brutal work and does whatever the hell she wants, and I honestly think that's the most effective aspect about her character. We haven't been given any information about why she's loyal to Ragyo, who she is, or where she came from. We only know that she considers her work fun and that she just does what she wants. So for all we know she could switch sides at the last second and go against Ragyo. She could kill them all. Hell, she could be an alien herself or even made of Life Fibers like Ryuko.

She's also effective because she actually draws emotional responses from people. Aside from her being a horrible parent, all people have had to say about Ragyo is that she's hot. With Nui, they either think she's extremely annoying, scary as hell, cute as a button, or just damn freaky. No matter if they like her or not, they react more to her and actually are impacted by her presence more than they are with Ragyo.

Personally even though I think her characterization is excellent, she annoys the heck out of me and fascinates me at the same time. But hey, she made an impact and that's what a good character does. So I thought I'd pay her some respect.
This whole series just gets my kudos. I can't wait until episode 20!
